PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING MODULES (PBLM)

PBLM's are actual patient cases in a book format that permits free inquiry. The learner can ask any question of the patient in any sequence and get the patient's response and perform any item of the physical examination in any sequence and learn the result as in the real clinical situation. Any laboratory and diagnostic test can be ordered in any sequence as well. Whatever can be done with the actual patient on history and physical and the ordering of laboratory tests can be done with the PBLM. A separate "User's Guide" provided with each PBLM can be used with any of the PBLM's in the series and provides the key for free inquiry.

A 25-year-old woman, presents to the clinic with complaints of a rash and fatigue.

SEAN MCNEAL (C - 7/21/93 U - 2/1/01)
A one-day-old 37-week infant presents with transient tachypnea of the newborn during the first twelve hours of life. Heel sticks were obtained to check blood gases and CBC's. The child responded to oxygen therapy for the tachypnea, but prolonged oozing for 12 hours following the heel sticks was noted. The mother, age 26, gravida 1, para 0, had an uneventful pregnancy.

He was sent to the clinic by an orthopedic physician in the office above the clinic. This physician was evaluating him for an injury to his left calf sustained while golfing two days ago. During this evaluation his blood pressure was 220/110.

A 58-year-old woman is brought to the Emergency Room by ambulance. She is accompanied by her husband. She has experienced "flu-like" symptoms for four days. This evening she had a seizure. Husband is informant.

A 79-year-old man presents to neurology clinic after referral from his family practice physician. The patient had been generally healthy until the past six to eight months.

DEBORAH MURPHY (C - 5/27/93 U - 3/31/00)
A 20-year-old woman presenting at 34-weeks gestation for prenatal care. She has just moved from another city and brings her previous medical records with her.

HEATHER MUTZBAUER (C - 8/15/02 U - 9/6/05)

Mrs. Ramey underwent a lumbar laminectomy 6 weeks prior to this visit for a herniated disk. She experienced balance difficulties and hyperreflexic bladder post-operatively.

A 27-year-old man has voluntarily admitted himself to the hospital. He complains of his right hand hurting and indicates that he has been drinking which causes his nerves to be "up."

A small 13-year-old young man who does not appear to be in any acute distress. The patient has been hospitalized for re-evaluation because of failure to make a satisfactory recovery after his discharge from the hospital four weeks earlier following treatment for bacterial pneumonia.

JAMES RHODES (C - 10/16/95 U - 11/28/06)
A 74-year-old man presents to the emergency room via rescue squad in transfer from a referring hospital, where he went this morning complaining of weakness, chest pain and shortness of breath. He is receiving oxygen via nasal cannula and intravenous fluids with Dopamine.

PATRICK RICE (C - 10/30/95 U - 11/1/02)
A 26-year-old man is four-days post-trauma from a 30-foot fall off a cliff while rock climbing. He has suffered a comminuted fracture of his right distal tibia and a small laceration on his scalp. He has dismissed his orthopedic physician and requests your service.
